                                                            SUBURBS

More than 2 million Slovaks — over one third of the population — live in large residential complexes. In the 1970s, these blocks of flats accounted for 97% of all new housing developments. For comparison, the figure was 70% in the Czech Republic and 50% in Poland.
This research focused on analysing and examining who lives in these buildings: what kinds of people, and whether we can consider them a "block of flats" type of people.
While working on this research, I often encountered the opinion that living in blocks of flats is characterised by plaster-like bathrooms, broken mailboxes, and a generally grey atmosphere. I tried to avoid this overly simplified view. Instead, I aimed to highlight the colourfulness, diversity, and vibrancy of life in these residential buildings.
